The third approved lunar mission, Chandrayan-3, is the last attempt at India's ambitions to become a low-cost space force.

After the failed 2019 mission, India's space agency has said it will try again to land on the moon this year.

The new Chandrayan-3 session will be composed of a brand-and-Rover, but not even an orbiter”, said the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Kailasavivodivovo Sivan for media at the agency's headquarters in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The Chandrayan 2 mission in September 2019 successfully established a lunar orbit that broadcasts scientific data on Earth. But ISRO's hopes of sending Vikram Lander with remote controls to the moon were interrupted when she lost contact with the landing ship.

Chandrayan-2 was intended to land Virka Lander on the southern moon pole, where no other lunar mission had gone before. The region is believed to contain water, since craters in the area are largely unaffected by high sun temperatures.

The ISRO had hoped to confirm the presence of water in the form of ice, first discovered in its mission in 2008.

In December, NASA confirmed that it had found the site of Vikram Lander's fall on the moon with the help of amateur space enthusiast Shamuga Subramanian, a 33-year-old IT architect from Chennai, India.

Chandrayan-3 will have a similar “configuration” as the previous mission, Sivan said.

Only the United States, Russia and China have landed on the moon. Beijing's Sonda Chang/e-4 landed on the dark side of the moon last year, while Israel made an unsuccessful effort to land the Beresheet ship on the moon in April 2019.

India's third lunar mission will likely begin in 2020 and will cost less than its previous mission, the PTI news agency reported on Tuesday, citing Jitendra Singh, the new minister for the Space Department.

Sivan also said the ISRO was making a good “progress for its human space flight scheduled for late 2021, adding that four astronauts were selected for training, which will begin later this month.

The project, dubbed Gaganyaan, will cost $1.4 billion, the government said in 2018.

India has developed a reputation for affordable satellite launchs and space missions. Its pilotless mission on Mars in 2014 cost only $74m, less than the Hollywood film budget, Bity.

Sivan also announced that the ISRO had begun the process of buying land for a second spatial airport in the town of Thothukud, in the state of Tamil Nadu, broadcasts Kosovas.
