General surgeon Luther Terry wrote in the report that smoking is the main factor in lung cancer.
Another problem raised in the report was the increase, to the alarming extent of heart disease cases among Americans who smoked. The figures reported on lung cancer and heart disease corresponded to the increasing number of people who smoked.
The report caused a wave against smoking inside and abroad.
