Thousands of people between them and Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi attended the funeral ceremony of Iranian General Sassem Solejmani, Iraqi Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, as well as eight Iraqi military leaders who were killed Friday by an American air strike at Baghdad airport.
The target of the attack was Iranian General Solejmani.
President Donald Trump said he had ordered the attack to stop an imminent attack that Solemann was planning to commit to Americans in the region.
Many of the people attending Saturday's funeral ceremony were dressed in black and carried Iraqi flags and militants backed by Iran. Some of them called America's “death”.
Iran has promised it will retaliate over the general's murder, what has prompted calls for restraint from world leaders who fear the outbreak of war in the region.
President Trump said he ordered the attack to stop a war and not start one, as he put it.
The US has dismissed reports that its forces carried out other air strikes after Friday's, where Qasssem Solejmani was killed.
Washington has closed the embassy in Baghdad and has ordered American citizens to leave the country.
