The French chief diplomat made the statement ahead of an emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers, which is held due to mounting tensions between Iran and the United States. Last week, the United States killed top Iranian commander, Qasem Suleiman, through an air strike in Baghdad. The Kurdish forces led by Soleman are considered terrorists by the United States.
Later, Iran attacked military bases in Iraq with ballistic missiles, where American forces were sheltered. Tehran announced that it will stop implementing restrictions provided with the nuclear agreement. US President Donald Trump said in 2018 that the United States was withdrawing from the agreement and would restore severe sanctions on Iran. The latter insists that his nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes.
US President Donald Trump claims the agreement was insufficient and should be renegotiated because it does not solve the problem of Iran's ballistic missile programme or its involvement in regional conflicts. At the same time, the restoration of US sanctions has caused major damage to Iran's economy.
