Basha from Brussels: Albania has not met EU-set conditions

Democratic Party Chairman Lulzim Basha said in Brussels that the situation has become even more difficult for Albania for integration because the country according to him has not made progress in the established conditions. Referring to O report SBE/ ODIHR, Basha said that “instead of Albania meeting the condition of free elections [...]

Referring to O report SBE/ ODIHR, Basha said that “instead of Albania meeting the condition of free and fair elections, developed an unconstitutional process of monist” voting.

“At the PEP Political Assembly, I have found the opportunity to explain to our sister parties, that despite the difficult situation, despite the fact that everyone already accepts that Albania has not met the conditions set to open negotiations, a political decision is required. A political decision, which on the one hand signals to the Albanian people that Europe really keeps its doors open and on the other, to give a clear message to Albanian authorities, that the European Union, member states, now through the negotiation process, will exert additional pressure on the government. This pressure will help overcome the country's constitutional, democratic and institutional crisis through the only instrument that Europe recognises, which recognises democracies, which are free and fair elections. ”

Asked what the opposition's position for a yes under conditions that could come from member states, Mr. Basha replied:

The basic <x0rser to be a member of the European Union is democracy, and here they meet not only the interests of the DP and the united opposition, but of all honest Albanians, to end a corrupt and crime-related autism, and guarantee the conditions for functional democracy. That means free and fair votes, punishment to captured politicians by co-operating with crime to steal elections.

The opposite is happening in Albania today, the famous issues, the files “184” and “339 body are not investigated, the file “184” has led to Debar to close.

Such an approach would help not only the opposition but all Albanians to restore the country to law enforcement tracks, punish the crime-related politicians, and, above all, free and fair elections, which are the only step that can take the country out of its deep crisis. ”

During the interview, the opposition leader also spoke about the importance of free and fair elections for the European integration process.

The European Union set free elections as condition last year. In fact, not only did not free and fair elections take place, but the country could not hold democratic elections. It went towards a monstrous process with a party that itself ran, itself voted, counting itself, violating the Constitution, violating laws, violating constitutional institutions, ignoring the decrees of the president of the Republic.
There are no elections in the Republic of Albania without decree, and these were votes that were held without any constitutional and judicial grounds. That's what O Report Says SBE-ODHIR is the most significant summary of Albanian problems. It clearly shows that only after the opposition was denied any institutional breakthrough such as the proposal we made to separate politics from crime with the law on the Veting of politicians, we were forced towards the steps we took to save democracy, for public interest, not for our power. So in that sense, I don't expect there to be a change of conditions established by the European Union but only strengthening them. ”

One of the questions Mr. Basha answered was whether the opposition thinks it has won the international community's awareness battle.

There is no doubt in Brussels there is great awareness of the deep crisis of democracy, of the deep crisis of rule of law in Albania. A major credit lies with the Democratic Party, belongs to the opposition, who has made the necessary battles for Albania, for Albanians. Clearly, by the way events are taking place in the country, Albania is fleeing Europe.
The Democratic Party and the united opposition stand firm for European integration and demand that the process of opening negotiations also serves to win this cause. The cause of free and fair elections as the foundation of democracy, accountability to citizens, and an equal and just society before the law.

These are the foundations of Europe, these are the foundations of every EU member country, and having with them the authority of the EU and member states in this case, we do a great service to Albania and Albanians, and we extend the day of victory of this battle, free and fair elections as the solution to the terrible political and economic crisis in which the current government”.
