Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammed Javad Zarif, has made a surprising presentation in Biarrritz in the middle of the G7 summit when Western politics towards Iran has been one of the most controversial issues.
Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed that Zarif had flown to Biarrriz at the invitation of French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian. The spokesman said there would be no meetings with American officials, writes The Guardian, following Periscopi.
A senior French diplomat has confirmed that Zarif was invited to Biarrriz for talks with Le Drianni, whose invitation described as continuation of the diplomatic initiative by French President Emmanuel Macron, in order to reduce tensions and revive diplomacy with Iran. Zarif met Macron in Paris on Friday.
Zarif had not been formally invited to G7 but Macron had informed the other leaders in the summit of his presence, including President Donald Trump.
The president had a conversation yesterday with all G7 leaders and partners that information was circulated among them,” said a diplomat.
Asked about the Iranian minister's presence, Trump had only said “without comment”. /Periscope
