World Mosquito Day marks the date when the link between mosquitoes and malaria disease was discovered. On this day of 1897, the link between malaria and mosquitoes was identified by British physician Sir Ronald Ross.
He also found out that the female Anpheles mosquito was the disease transmitter. In 1902, Ross received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.
About 1,000 and 500 malaria cases are reported annually in the United States. Most of these cases are travelers or immigrants who entered the country from parts of the world where malaria is common.
The purpose of this day is to increase awareness about malarian causers as well as learn ways to stop it.
Knowing that mosquitoes also carry the dangerous Zika virus, this day becomes even more important, the importance and need to avoid contact with mosquitoes is understood.
