Preparations have started in Washington for the 4 July celebrations, which are taking a new form by President Donald Trump to solemnly reveal the image of the American Army. The president himself will give the speech, and the fireworks show will be more spectacular than before.
There is a special place for VIP people to be there with invitations from the White House.
Tanks, armoured vehicles, and aircraft flights are unusual in the Fourth of July celebrations. Just like a speech from the president. But President Trump is determined to celebrate “as no other” and says he wants to honor the American Army.
Critics accuse the president of politicising a holiday that traditionally brought together Americans of each group.
But a new survey says most Americans don't mind the president giving a public speech on July 4th. That's Tom Dewey's opinion.
I think the air show will be wonderful. I don't like how much they blocked Lincoln's Memorial. But I like the idea of tanks. While the rest of the celebrations will be as normal. We'll be able to see fireworks as we used to, so I don't think there's any problem”.
President Trump fell in love with military parades after attending the Day of Bastija celebrations in Paris in 2017. A plan for a military parade on Veterans' Day in Pennsylvania Boulevard was abandoned because of the cost, estimated at 92 million dollars.
Some Americans like Steve Dora from Texas are concerned about the cost of celebrations.
This will be interesting. Something that hasn't been done before. I would worry about what it would cost. There are other things that could be used, especially when you see homeless people in this area. It makes you sad. It's good to celebrate the country's independence, but spend so much money and they still don't know how much it's gonna cost. I think it's too much. I'm a proud American, but I still think they can spend money somehow better”.
There has not yet been given a precise figure of how much military use and major celebrations in Washington will cost. But Jeff Chase, who has come to celebrate July 4th in Washington, says the cost is negligible.
“Politicians complain about the cost when they're opposed to something, but that's irrelevant if we were to spend on something else that would be less worth”.
City officials say the Trump administration has not yet paid $7m, which is owed to the city from the inauguration spending at jan 2017.
The Federal Aviation Administration says it will suspend operations at Washington's National Airport during President Trump's speech and combat aircraft shows. The July 4th fireworks in Washington are the most spectacular in America. And President Trump has promised that this year they will be the most magnificent “ever”. /voa
