The 41-year-old woman's lifeless body was found in the bushes near her home on Sunday, local police said.
Relatives and friends later identified the victim as Yelena Grigoreeva, the Russian news report Fontanka reports.
Grigorieva, who reportedly received death threats, campaigned regularly for human rights in Russia.
In a Facebook post Monday, activist Dinar Idrisov said her friend Grigorieva was a brutal suicide “near her house”.
“She was recently the victim of violent threats to death”, he wrote, adding that she had filed several complaints in the police.
