The United States commends its reconciliation to respond to the invitation to be interviewed by the Special Prosecutor's Office of the Special Chambers for Kosovo”, the statement said.
Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj submitted the irreversible resignation from his post Friday. In a surprise decision, he said the reason for the resignation is “if to be questioned by the Specialised Chambers in The Hague as suspected”.
The Special Chambers -- or as they are known in Kosovo, The Special Court in The Hague -- was founded by the decision of the Kosovo Parliament, while international prosecutors and court work there and will address claims of involvement of former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army in war and post-war crimes.
The Special Prosecutor refused to give any details about Mr. Haradinaj's invitation for questioning, which is expected to occur in the middle of next week.
Mr. Haradinaj's resignation occurred in a period of increasing pressure on him to lift tariffs on Serbian goods, with which Belgrade continues to condition the continuation of talks with Kosovo.
He voiced confidence that after his resignation the country must go to new elections, while in their favour the Social Democrat Initiative, which is part of the ruling coalition, as well as the opposition that rejected any possibility of creating any new government or technical government. The issue now rests with President Hashim Thaci, who must consult with political forces in the country.
Mr. Haradinaj's resignation could delay further efforts to renew talks on normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
