The military court in San Diego declared Edward Gallagher innocent of all charges, except for photos of a dead prisoner's body.
The maximum punishment for photos with a corpse is four months, but Gallagher has already served nine months in custody.
Two soldiers under Galagher's command testified that they saw him slaughter the wounded in the neck.
Military prosecutors also argued that Gallagher's messages and photos were incriminating.
In some of them Gallagher seemed to hold the dead militant from the hair and holding a knife in the other hand.
Gallagher's defence lawyers, however, argued that the charges against him were fabricated by his group's disgruntled soldiers who wanted to get him out of command.
An Iraqi general testified that Gallagher did not hit the Islamic state warrior.
A U.S. Navy sergeant also testified that Gallagher moved the militant body after he died of injuries sustained in an air strike, and that he didn't see wounds on the militant's neck.
