The number of new cases tripled and efforts to control the spread of the virus were hampered due to local residents' distrust of health workers and attacks by militants armed to clinics where Ebola's disease is treated.
Between January and early May, there have been 42 attacks on health facilities, with 85 workers injured or killed, according to World Health Organization figures.
The current measures to address Ebola are not functioning”, said Corinne NUW, director of the British charity organisation Oxfam in Congo.
According to official authorities, 1,000 cases were recorded during March and took less than three months to reach 2,000.
“We are unable to vaccinate, we cannot treat those who are sick, we are unable to convey the situation of those who may have been exposed to the virus”, said World Health Organisation spokesman Tarik Jasarevic.
More than 1,300 people have died so far from Ebola's disease.
