On June 12th, World Day for the Fight Against Child Employment, proclaimed by the United Nations to raise awareness of their employment, AA has compiled statistics worldwide on the issue.

According to the report that the UN-related International Labour Organisation (ILO) published in November 2017 on “The assessment of Politics and Programs, the Elimination of Child Labor by 2025”, almost one in 10 children worldwide is employed.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) describes this situation as “child employment diminishes their potential and dignity and hinders their physical and mental development”.

Of the world's child workers, 64 million are girls, 88 million boys

There are about 151.6 million children of the age of 5-17 in the world who are employed, where 64 million of these children are girls and 88 million are boys. As 71% of this rating works in the agricultural sector, highlight about 72.5 million children's workers are forced to work in sectors that threaten their health, security and moral development.

Agricultural sector with 71 %s in child employment focus

The distribution of the victims of child workers in the world according to the regions is about 72.1 million in Africa, 62.1 million in Asia and the Pacific, 10.7 million in America, 1.2 million in Arab countries, and 5.5 million in Europe and Central Asia.

Meanwhile, about half of 151.6 million <x0vikes” are between the ages of 5-11, while 42 million are between 12-14 and 37 million are between the ages of 15-17.

Also, 58% of child workers and 62 percent of those working in dangerous sectors are boys.

In the focus of child employment is the agricultural sector at 71 percent, including fishing, forestry, the work of herding, commercial farming, and other jobs, while 17 percent the service sector and the size of 12 percent industry.

World's child pators are on the decline

According to UN figures, in 2000 there were 245.5 million child laborers, this figure in 2004 has dropped to 222.2 million, to 215.2 million in 2008, in 2012 to 167.9 million and 151.6 in 2016, which is also the current level.

The number of children working at dangerous work from 170.5 million in 2000 has dropped to 128.3 million in 2004, 115.3 million in 2008, as well as 85.3 million in 2012, and 72.5 in 2016, which is the current level.

If current decline rates are preserved, the UN stresses that by 2025, the number of child workers will drop to 121 million, and the number of children working at dangerous work will drop to 52 million.

The reasons for child employment include limited legal rules, poverty and social fragility, poor school system and inadequacy to attend school, the lack of effective definition of social dialogue and rights for collective negotiation, as well as lack or weakness of freedom in organisation.

The UN, with the establishment of legal working age, social protection systems, legal standards and regulations for the work of adults and young people, as well as with programs and principles of educational equality for all aims to eliminate child employment by 2025.
