A controversy caused by increased family ties between members of the Portuguese government and their cabinets today prompted the first resignation within the Socialist executive, that of the Secretary of State for Environment.
“Carlos Martins, under the fire of criticism because he had hired his cousin, as assistant to his cabinet chief, submitted the resignation that was admitted to”, according to an environment ministry communiqué.
His cousin Armindo dos Santos Alves had also resigned the day before, following Atish.
“I have always acted with confidence, but I appreciate that this issue could harm the” government, Martins stressed to justify his request for resignation addressed to Prime Minister Antonio Costa.
