Thousands flock to the town of Barsana in Utar Pradesh for the special ritual, which attracts both local pilgrims and foreign tourists each year.
Males from the nearby village of Nandgaon sing provocative songs and try to paint Barsana's women as they respond by hitting them with large sticks; men cut their blows to the ground with a shield over their head.
It's all a joke and part of the fun. The festival marks the beginning of spring, and is a time dedicated to forgiveness, renewed friendships and triumph of good over evil.
Lathmar Holi is usually celebrated several days before the great celebrations of the Hall's main festival; he and this time was just as vibratory and colorful as other times. During the celebration pauses, participants consume a cold drink known as theʹthandai, trying to enjoy all together, as a way to draw close to each other.
Barsane's wives prepare for a month before the ritual, hoping that he will eventually witness a show of love, entertainment and equality.
