European Clubs Association (ECA), TV networks and U The EFA is facing the reality that growing audiences and interest requires changes in the current format.
As the preliminary phase of this race continues to be full of excitement, the group phase seems dimer and many matches lack emotion, especially when the qualifications in the next phase have only been secured or when there are major quality differences between the two teams.
All parties involved know that the race must change, but these developments will not come before the end of the 2024/25 season. Moreover, these changes will be placed behind a curtain of consensus.
Because everything is being kept secret, it has caused world media to report many things, some truths, and some less.
There have been many speculations about the format and style of this new race. But everything will be decided after five years of meetings, debates, and agreements.
The first side that wants something more from the Champions League is clubs, and that's what this demand has been primary in their agenda in recent times.
These demands are the result of a G14 group meeting that now controls ECA, an association that has signed a memorandum with the U. EFA to create a third European league.
The ECA is comprised of 232 clubs from all over Europe, and next week these clubs will meet in Amsterdam along with several European Union commissionors to update their projects.
At the last meeting, held in Nyon, the ECA presented its first draft for the next European race.
One of the clubs for this new race is to divide three football levels (such as the League of Champions, Europe League and the third race, which will begin in 2021). Then clubs could fall by evil and be promoted to the highest-level league. These games would be played on weekends.
Although such a European league has been attempted in basketball for over ten years, it has not yet been fully achieved.
At the weekend, the matches will have greater television audiences, but sponsors would then conflict with their interest in local leagues.
In order for these many ideas to be shaped into the final project, they must first pass through certain filters.
Federations, leagues, player union and clubs must find a framework of co-existence, under which local leagues can continue to exist.
The European Union will have a major role in this project.
