O SB hosts Albanian, Serbian language courses for young people

The OSCE mission in Kosovo through a communique for the media has indicated that it has started three-month Albanian and Serbian-language courses for young Albanians, Serbs, Bosniaks and Roma from the municipality of Obilic. 20 young Serbs, Bosniaks and Roma attended the first Albanian language class on March 18th in the village of Plemetin, while the group of 11 Albanians began the course of Serbian language on March 21st. The courses are being followed by the Deputy Chairman of the Community Committee, Head of the Committee for Communities, Director of the Youth Centre, and Chairman of the Obilic Youth Action Council.
For three months, coursers will have the rare opportunity to get acquainted with their peers ' language from other communities. Since such activities are not yet part of the formal system of education, extracurrial language teaching helps young people of different communities acquire basic knowledge of each other's language, thus enabling easier communication and overcoming language barriers.
“I am very pleased with this initiative, especially since many young people have shown interest in learning each other's language”, said the municipality's Deputy Chairman for the Communities in Obilic, Slavisa Jakovljevic, adding that although he speaks in part Albanian, he has decided to participate to encourage others to attend courses.
Initiative is part of the O Mission's continued effort The SEU to promote and strengthen relations between communities, dialogue and tolerance. Moreover, the event is the result of the Inter-Communal Declaration signed in 2016, where municipalities in Pristina, Gracanica, Shtimes, Lipjan, Fush Kosovo and Obilic vowed to boost their co-operation in community affairs, especially among young people.
