She made comments at a UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva on the day when an anti-mysliman attack in New Zealand killed 49 people.
The debate, dedicated to “the achievement of nationalist populism and extremist supremeist ideology”, was planned long before the attack on the town of Christscherch.
“Sulmi killer Islamist and terrorist, just hours ago, at two mosques in New Zealand, is another terrible reminder that racism kills”, Bachelet said, as diplomats from 47 Council member states held a minute of silence for victims.
Bachelet called on states to ban hate speech, launch human rights education campaigns and boost awareness of diversity in society.
“You can worry about your country and at the same time about the world”, she said.
Of the shooting at two mosques in Christchrich, New Zealand, 49 people were killed and 20 others were seriously injured.
Police there confirmed that a man was charged with murder and that he will appear before the tribunal on Saturday morning.
