Greece offers residence permits for foreign citizens buying real estate worth at least 250,000 euros. This is the only condition that they be equipped with five-year-old residence permits. The program is called “Golden Vis” and began applying in 2013 as an attempt to transfusion the construction sector and the imobilar that were experiencing a slow death.
Since then, by November 2018, the number of access to such investors and their family members has reached nearly 10,000. Tendence is constantly on the rise, says Directorate of Migration and Foreign Citizens in Athens Director Ilias Hronopoulos.
He said there are Chinese and Turkish citizens in downtown Athens who have invested. There are Russians and Turks on the coast of Athens. At that, he said there is no application for “The golden visa” from Albanians.
The “golden viza” programme has brought Greece a total of 2.5 billion euros in revenue. But the European Commission has criticised Greece for the fact that authorities do not control the origin of the amounts invested by foreign citizens, who want to benefit the golden visa. According to Brussels, money laundering is thus favoured.
