Climate change poses a growing threat to glaciers in the Hindu mountains of Kush and Himalayas, a new study reveals.
According to him, if double-carbon emissions are not reduced rapidly, two thirds of these giant ice fields could disappear.
Even if the world limits temperature growth to 1.5 degrees Celsius this century, at least one third of the ice will melt, the study says.
“The impact on people in the region will be demonstrated from the deterioration of air pollution to more extreme weather”, said Philippus Wester of the International Integrated Mountain Development Centre, which has led the study, followed. REL.
The glaciers in Hindu Kush and Himalaje are an important source of water for 250 million people living in eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Butan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
