Scientists have found that many mammals can live much longer than expected, meaning that the whale named Bowhead has an average life expectancy of 268 years.

Although no one has been found dating from 1751, it can tell why a whale found in 2007 had a 200-year-old harp placed on it.

Bowheads, who live in the Arctic, were previously known to live at least 211 years, since the age for one of them has been determined using amino acids from its eye.

But Australian researchers who used a genetic plant to predict animal life expectancy say that whales live some 60 years longer than that.

They processed this by studying 42 genes and a chemical process that they undergo so-called methylimia that can be used to predict life expectancy.

The study's author, Dr. Benjamin Mayne, of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, said that vertebrates go way through life, from a tropical fish that lives for only eight weeks, to the Bowhead whales.

It is incredible to think that there is an animal that lives for nearly three centuries and could be alive when Captain Cook first arrived in Australia. The results will also help process the risk of extinction of animals. This cannot be used to predict people's life expectancy, but it also provides only the average”, Mayne said.

Using their method for endangered species, scientists found that the mammoths who lived for some 60 years, similar to elephants.

Researchers also found that humans have a maximum natural life expectancy of only 38 years.

Using the human genome, researchers found that the maximum natural life span of humans is 38 years, consistent with the anthropological estimates of life expectancy among early modern humans.

They found that Neanderthals and Denisovians had a maximum life span of 37.8 years, similar to modern people living around the same time.

The reason for modern people's life expectancy is more than double that length has decreased because of advances in modern living standards and medicine, researchers say.
