Police said 23 people have been rescued, but warned that the number of dead persons could increase. The area where missing persons are believed to be located is too dangerous to carry out search operations.
The White Island volcano, also known by local residents as Whakaari, is one of the most active volcanoes in New Zealand.
Despite this fact, many tourists visit the island constantly.
New Zealand Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern said some tourists are around the island and on it. Among them are residents of Zealand but also foreign tourists.
The volcano exploded at 2: 00 p.m. local time, which in European times occurs at 1: 00 p.m. after midnight, writes “BBC”, Report Express.
