Serbia's Russian armatta has sparked concerns in the West and in neighbouring countries of the region that are still being renewed by the bloody wars of the 1990s.
Serbia, whose army is based on former Soviet weapons technology, has provided MiG-29 fighter aircraft from Russia in recent years, as well as helicopters, tanks and armoured carriers.
It aspires to membership in the European Union, but maintains close ties with Russia and has refused to join international sanctions against it due to the conflict in Ukraine.
It has pledged to stay outside NATO -- a goal of Russia, which does not take a good look at expanding the Western military alliance in the Balkans.
Serbia has relied on Russia in its continued refusal to recognise Kosovo's independence, which declared citizenship in 2008, nine years after the war ended with NATO intervention that ended the atrocities of Serbian forces against Albanians.
