The four men were in custody and were not officially charged with any crime.
They were sent to a location where rape and murder allegedly occurred, as well as to the site where the victim's body was burned, a police official said.
Police Commissioner Hyberabad Sadzhanar told the BBC that police had sent the accused to the crime scene to re-struct what had happened.
Police fired at them when they tried to kidnap officers' weapons and flee, he said.
On that occasion, two policemen were injured.
The burning body of the 27-year-old victim was found last week, after being reported missing.
The case sparked anger and protests throughout India over police inaction.
After reporting the murder of suspects, about 300 people gathered at the crime scene in Shadnagar to commend the police.
However, in New Delhi, some monitors have condemned the police murder.
This type of justice is false. Their murders are to deceive and stop our demands for responsibility by the government, the judiciary and the police, and for dignity and justice for women. We demand that this be examined in detail”, said Women Progress Association Secretary Cavita Krishnan.
