Scientists have discovered thousands of mysterious holes in the seabed in Big Sur, California.
Researchers from the Monterey Bay Water Research Institute (MBARI) were monitoring the deep seabed in Big Sur when the strange holes were discovered.
Larger holes, described as pockets, average about 180 feet [180 m] long and about five feet [5 m] deep.
In a statement, MBARI noted that for the first time, he discovered some of the holes in 1999. However, subsequent research by MBARI and other organizations has uncovered more than 5,200 common holes in 1,000 square miles [1300 sq km].
“Vrimes are still a mystery, as we find no evidence that they were created by gas or liquid on the sea floor in the recent past. Micro-depressions have recently been formed features of erosion; they are not the original one. In general, much more work must be done to understand how they were formed, ” said Eve Lundsten, a researcher near MBARI.
