Most journalists imprisoned in China and Turkey

At least 250 journalists are inmates in the world. In this direction China leads as an authoritarian country that does not tolerate media independence, the Committee for Protection of Journalists (CPJ) said on Wednesday.
“Most of the imprisoned journalists have been charged as <x1) state enemies” or for publishing “false news”, the New York headquarters organisation stressed.
The CPJ has identified at least 48 journalists imprisoned in China, one more than in 2018.
As other countries where the practice of this profession is dangerous are: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Vietnam and Iran.
In second place after China is Turkey, with 47 jailed journalists marking the decline in number by 2018, with a total of 68 journalists being detained. However, this is not assessed as the real improvement of the situation, as Ankara managed to close more than 100 media by prosecuting on charges of “citing terrorism”. As a result, many journalists have feared and lost their jobs.
“Ten journalists in Turkey are pending trial, while others are sentenced in absentia and threatened with arrest if they return to their country”, the Committee stressed, broadcast rel.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt have out of 26 journalists in prison.
In Saudi Arabia, 18 journalists have been imprisoned without knowing what they were accused of. The Committee to Protect Journalists is also concerned about the cases of <x0 recovery and malnutrition of political prisoners, including four journalists”.
