Mr. Mellenchon was filmed screaming “I'm Republic! ” towards a police official and hitting him. With his colleagues later trying to break up his party's central office that was being raided by police, writes the BBC, translates Periscopi.
He leads France's Indecisive Party and supports the vest protests.
He competed against Emmanuel Macroni in 2017 in presidential elections and won 19.5 per cent of the vote in the first round.
Paris prosecutors were investigating several irregularities in Mr. Melenchon and on suspicions that his party had misused EU funds in employing parliamentary assistants.
