The violence that erupted in the town of Arbido, near the mountain border, lasted several hours, according to an army statement. Seven members of security forces and 80 militants were killed in the attack.
Among the 35 civilians killed were 34 women. Burkina Faso's president, Roch Marc Caboe, pronounced two days of national mourning due to this attack.
The heroic action of our soldiers has enabled them to neutralise 80 terrorists. This barbarous attack caused the death of 35 civilians, most of them women”, said the president of Cabora.
For years Burkina Faso has been involved in Islamic extremism that has been seen in Mali, where the French army was forced to intervene to oust jihadist groups from several cities.
The frequent attacks on northern and eastern parts of the state have influenced more than a million people to move from their homes based on UN data.
Although Burkina Fassos' army has been trained by France and the United States, it has so far failed to eradicate extremist violence, writes the Guardian”.
