The November 26th earthquake thankfully in Tirana did not cause life loss, as happened in Durres and Thumana, but has left behind not a few consequences in private and public housing damage.
For this reason, Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, at the inspection of the support collection warehouses in Farka, called for citizens' co-operation to obey the orders of Tirana's special structures and construction experts, not to return to residences designated as uninhabitable and pose a threat to life.
The “Situate in Tirana passed its first emergency phase, but we have not gone through without significant damage. The first thing I ask for is co-operation with authorities who declare houses or palaces uninhabitable. We don't need heroism, but for cold-blooded behavior, without panic, and with full conviction to authorities who communicate uninhabited homes, or engineers who do their verifications. This is vital! I don't think there's anyone in the head who's going to take the risk and insist on the will of the police and firemen, to get into a palace, where the alternative is actually even better than the house I'm leaving behind and that might be damaged”, Veliaj said.
He made it known that Tirana City Hall is obliged to carry out even some shares for controlled destruction of several buildings that have shown earthquake problems and pose a threat to residents' lives. He stressed that all these Tirana City Hall families will accommodate in the capital's social centres and hotels. “We must dismantle an chimney at Student City, which has been occupied by construction without permission. It's got a few cracks, it's a dangerous situation, and so on, we'll get assessments during the day for other palaces that need to be evacuated, while social centres are opening 24/7; so for residents of Tirana, housing will be done either in a social center or in any of the hotels where we already have a waiting list, which can accommodate people in very good condition”, Veliaj underlined.
The mayor stressed that thanks to the solidarity the citizens showed, Tirana too has met the needs for clothing, while calling for who has the opportunity to contribute to beds, blankets and food. We have exhausted all the clothing needs. So, we have enough jackets, sweaters, sweaters and underwear for Tirana's needs. So please don't bring clothes and clothes. What we really need are blankets, which are not enough now that winter approaches, portable beds, mattresses, and yorgans. We also need food, mostly we need food that doesn't break down, so not things that are consumed for today, but things that have an expiration deadline at the end of 2020, so that we can make sure that during all these months we have enough storage in the warehouse to address the largest peripheral family of Tirana, especially in rural areas, where we have the biggest”, Veliaj added.
He also thanked all those well - known private subjects and public figures that have set the example of helping restore and rebuild damaged dwellings. I'd like to thank Rita Orna very much for taking on a home and a family. If everyone did that, then I believe that before Christmas and New Year's, we're going to meet a lot of the needs and I believe that anyone has a public name that can collect financial energy or practical aid, use it. This is the day to give everyone one hand. Rita did it, and I'm sure they can do it a lot more people with opportunities. I look forward to turning this challenge into an opportunity, so that Tirana, Albania, will rise stronger than it was before the 911 earthquake, Veliaj said.
He appealed to citizens to contribute even to government portal E-Albania with monetary value to ensure the reconstruction of areas after this first difficult moment. He then added that Tirana City Hall has established its entire emergency system and transparency management of all citizens or different subjects. We're in the main warehouses of Farka, where after we've received assistance from the citizens, we do a selection according to the clothing, according to the needs of every family, and then the central warehouse is distributed to our 27 entities, where we have small warehouses, and then to each family. We have a transparent system, we are very grateful for all the citizens who donated, but the best way to say gratitude, is not to repeat thanks, but to show responsibility and loyalty, how we manage all their generosity and kindness. We have a database, what goes into the warehouse, what comes out, and then we reconcile it with everything that's distributed in the unit, where even the resident who's got help from”, Veliaj stressed.
The mayor also indicated that Tirana, in addition to meeting its needs, will contribute to the most affected areas not only with aid but also with human capacities to help cope with the situation.
