He is the second candidate from this state, since Laszlo Trozcany had been rejected for the position, due to conflict of interest problems.
Varhely, who is Hungary's ambassador to the European Union, has said the Western Balkans will be a priority if it is confirmed by the Enlargement Commissioner.
At the start of the hearing, he has said it must work to reach reconciliation for starting membership negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania, a decision that was not reached at the EU's latest summit. According to Varhely, the Western Balkans region and the enlargement process with this region should be a priority, while methodology in the enlargement process must be adjusted so that this process can be faster dynamic.
“We should make the EU more functional, but this should not prevent the enlargement process”, he said.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhely has warned an ambitious agenda regarding dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, which has so far facilitated the European Union, the REL reports.
“I will work together with (the EU's top representative for Foreign Policy and Security) to bring dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina to successful conclusion in 2020”, he has said.
Varhely has also been raised with questions about the vitality and the issue of rule of law. He has said he is loyal to the EU and no one else. As for rule of the law, Varhalei has indicated that he will remain a priority in his work on the enlargement process, as a key criterion for the countries of the Western Balkans, adding that he will not hesitate to use criteria about the rule of law to halt the negotiation process or open chapters if any candidate state does not respect these criteria.
