The law aimed to close the fast - growing market of supposed high - alcohol - content medical treatment.
Some of the so - called treatments were sold and purchased as alcoholic beverages. The new law denied doctors even the right to prescribe beer for medical purposes. The constitutional ban on alcohol in the United States remained in force until December 5, 1933, when states ratified the 21st amendment, which abolished the 18th amendment to the American Constitution.
Since then, not only alcohol for medical purposes but also alcoholic beverages of all kinds became legal again in the United States.
