Kosovo and Albania: Conspiracy for national unity, knowledge, marriages...

Research was conducted in October-November 2018. All interviewed 2,504 Citizens: 1,200 writer in Albania and 1,304 writer in Kosovo (1,004 Albanians and 300 Serbs).

This research is structured in five main blocks: 1. Knowledge and contact; 2. Attitudes and stereotypes; 3. Values and Beliefs; 4. Common politics; 5. Attitudes towards joining Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

BA NATIONAL SCHOOL

As for the desire to achieve national unity, 63 percent of respondents in Albania and 54 percent Others in Kosovo have declared that they want this union to be achieved.

16 percent Albanians in Albania and Kosovo do not want the national union. Most of them are from urban areas, both in Albania and Kosovo. Geographically, residents in the Pristina region and in central Albania make up the majority of citizens who oppose national unity.

Asked if they are willing to pay a tax which would enable the national union, the readiness of the newcomers decreases, because 29 percent of respondents in Albania and 49 percent Kosovo residents agree.

If you were offered the opportunity to vote in the referendum, 75 percent Albanian in Albania and 64 percent Albanians in Kosovo would vote for the national union.

Those who oppose joining a state give different reasons, among which the most frequent concerns the belief that the respective states of Kosovo and Albania function better as separate.

Also, a frequent attitude of opponents of the union is based on cultural differences and those of tradition between Kosovo Albanians and Albanians of Albania.

The real possibility of achieving the national union” has suffered significant decline when citizens have been asked about the real aspect of implementation, because only 23 percent Albanian Albanians and 17 percent The Kosovo Albanians have declared this project to be even practically possible.

The difference between Albanians in Albania and Albanians in Kosovo also has in the perception of the feasibility of the idea of the national union.

While Albanians in Albania think that the “international community” is the main factor that has the power to enable this idea, for Kosovo Albanians can do this mainly “liders of Kosovo and Albania”.

In both Albania and Kosovo, citizens who think the national union cannot be made and view the international community as the biggest obstacle.

As the second biggest obstacle in Albania, they see Serbia's opposition, while in Kosovo the states of our region in general.

In the category of citizens who trust the realisation of the national union, most in Kosovo say this will happen within 5 years (39 percent), while most in Albania consider it to happen within 10 years.

42 percent of citizens in Kosovo and 37 percent of citizens in Albania think that <x0 national reunification” and “EU membership” Kosovo and Albania are processes that oppose each other.

If you had to choose only one option, these respondents would give priority to “EU membership” before “National reunification”.

BUIVING

88 percent Kosovo Albanians have visited Albania, while 31.6 percent Albanian Albanians have visited Kosovo.

18 percent Kosovo Serbs have visited Albania in the past two years.

Tourism is the main reason for visits.

Security is the biggest problem for Kosovo Albanians who visit Albania (60 percent Feel safe) rather than for Albanians of Albania who visit Kosovo (85 percent Feel safe.

18 percent Kosovo Serbs feel safe when they travel through Albania.

SOCIAL DISTNCY

Albanians of Albania and Kosovo Albanians do not fully think the same way in terms of potential marriages between them.

75 percent Albanians in Albania would have no problem marrying Kosovo Albanians, while 56 percent Kosovo Albanians would not mind marrying Albanians of Albania.

84 percent Kosovo Albanians and 67 percent The Albanians of Albania do not want to have social reports with Serbs.

When it comes to social distance in relation to the peoples of Western Europe, 65.5 percent Albanian citizens could marry someone from Western Europe, while alone 19.5 percent Kosovo citizens would be ready for this move.

Even when marriages with people of other religions are being questioned, there are differences between the citizens of Kosovo and Albania.

79 percent the citizens of Albania have no problem marrying other religious members, but only 13.5 percent the citizens of Kosovo are potentially ready for these marriages.

PEOPLE

Kosovo Albanians are better informed of leaders of Albania's main institutions and their historical dates compared to Albania's Albanians in relation to the same Kosovo issues.

Kosovo Albanians watch Albania's media more than Albanians of Albania media.

45 percent Kosovo Albanians watch Albania's media at least several times a week, unlike 23 percent of Albanians of Albania in relation to Kosovo media.

37 percent Albanian Albanians have never followed Kosovo media, but 17 percent The Kosovo Albanians have not followed the Albanian media.

Resenents of both countries think education is more developed in Albania than in Kosovo, while rule of law, welfare and sports are more developed in Kosovo than in Albania.

As far as corruption perception is concerned, Kosovo Albanians think in Kosovo the level of corruption is greater than in Albania, while Albania's Albanians think corruption in Albania is greater than in Kosovo.

Kosovo Albanians get more positive health assessment in Albania (63 percent) than Albanians of Albania for their health (46 percent).

Albanians of Albania think Kosovo has greater economic potential, but Kosovo Albanians think Albania has greater potential.

DYALOGU

The possibility of correcting the border between Kosovo and Serbia has not been well received by Albanians in Kosovo (over 70 percent), nor by Albanians in Albania (over 52 per cent), nor by Serbs in Kosovo (over 80 per cent).

The exchange of territories Kosovo's north for the Presevo Valley is not considered an acceptable idea even if it results in Kosovo's acceptance on Serbia's part and Kosovo's membership in the United Nations.
