The political agreement was reached between the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission. The new regulations must be formally adopted by Parliament and the European Council. Applying this rule is expected to begin on 1 May 2021.
“Moving to the most efficient energy tires, European citizens can significantly reduce their fuel consumption, saving money and helping the area”, Commissioner for Climate and Energy Miguel Arias Canetti was quoted as saying. The commission noted that new regulations make tire labels more distinctive, more resistant in the future and more precise. Between 2014 and 2017, energy consumption in road transport increased by 5.6 percent, increasing greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector.
The Commission further explained that since driving tire resistance accounts for between 20 and 30 percent of vehicle fuel consumption, it is essential to reduce this resistance to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
“This is the European route for real energy security and climate protection: being more efficient in terms of energy in all areas of our life, we can reduce our energy bills and our dependence on imported and costly energy, as we increase industrial competitiveness, create jobs and make the European economy more stable”, Cane added.
