Czech foreign minister: Do not review Kosovo recognition

Czech Republic Foreign Minister Thomas Petricek says his country is not revising the decision to recognise Kosovo, though Czech President Milos Zaman has warned that this could happen. Petricek, in the interview given to Radio Free Europe, calls the European Council's decision not to ...
Radio Free Europe: Mr. Petricek, a wave of scepticism prevails in the Western Balkans following the European Council's decision to postpone the start of membership talks with northern Macedonia and Albania. What is the position of the Czech Republic in terms of EU enlargement?
Thomas Petricek: My country has supported the enlargement process as one of the main European Union policies. We have supported all Western Balkan countries in their quest to become EU members. I personally consider the European Council's decision in October as failure. For us it is now important to assure our partners in the Balkans that we will want to work with them. The process is still reliable. We should do our inside. But for us it is important that the European Union fulfil its part of the agreement, its commitments to Western Balkan countries. Both Albania and Northern Macedonia have made much progress in the past years, and we should encourage them to continue and make the role of the European Union in the reliable region.
Radio Free Europe: You called it failure. The result?
Thomas PetricekWe are in contact with both countries. We believe that progress will continue. Both countries must continue with reforms. At the same time, activities, meetings with our partners in the European Union continue to explain that the process and enlargement policy is what will bring stability and security to the region, which is already surrounded by EU countries.
Radio Free Europe: How do you see the idea of a “special partnership” between Western Balkan countries and the European Union, instead of their full membership?
Thomas Petricek: For the Czech Republic, there must be reliable prospects for membership. We believe that the integration process is based on merit, but that there should be strong commitment on our side, that once these countries meet all conditions for membership, they will be allowed within (the EU).
