German police have arrested three people in the western town of Offenbach on Tuesday under suspicion that they were planning a bomb attack on behalf of the so-called Islamic state group.
Frankfurt district prosecutor Nadja Niesen said the arrested persons wanted to kill as many people as possible of the other faith in the Rhine-Main region. She added that no location where the attacks were to be carried out was defined, but it is believed that this will be revealed after analyzing the evidence seized in three different houses in Offenbach.
German intelligence agencies and police have been placed in a high state of alert for possible attacks by Islamic militants since an asylum seekers from Tunisia killed 12 people with one truck in an open market in Berlin three years ago.
The main suspect arrested on Tuesday is a 24-year-old boy originally from Macedonia who allegedly planned to produce explosive devices and was trying to buy weapons via the internet. The other two detainees are Turkish citizens aged 21 and 22 years old.
Prosecutor Niesen said these people had accepted in front of others that they are ISIS supporters and all are known to the police.
In the suspect's home, substances were found that could be used to produce explosive devices, documents, and electronic data.
It is expected that the court will take the verdict Wednesday whether it will try three suspects or only one of them, writes “Reuters”, Report Express broadcast.
