According to him, President Trump had ordered commanders to draw up military options and present them to him.
On Saturday morning, the US leader had received information allowing the operation approved by Trump.
A senior Iraqi intelligence official said today that Al Baghdad's deputy in Iraq was killed a few months ago in the country's west by an American air strike, and that Americans had arrested his wife and handed him over to Iraqi authorities, the AP broadcast.
The Iraqi official said the woman had become a major source of information on the movement of Islamic State leaders and that Iraqi authorities were able to determine Al Baghdad's coordinates thanks to her.
Another Iraqi security official said the Iraqis had recently arrested Al Baghdad's cousin, who also helped with information about his movement.
The operation against Al Baghdad also included Turkey and Kurdish forces in Syria.
Trump said today that Al Baghdad was killed in an American Army operation last night in the province of Idlib.
Al Baghdad became famous in 2014 when he declared “califatin” in large parts of Iraq and Syria, where he ruled over about 8 million people and was responsible for numerous terrorist attacks worldwide.
The United States announced defeat “califatin” of the Islamic State this year.
