Turkish-backed militants fighting in Syria executed at least two Kurdish prisoners Saturday, one of them lying on the side of the road with their hands tied behind their backs, according to a video from the scene and a fighter who said he was witnessing executions.
In the video, two of the fighters shoot at the man with their hands tied, apparently to make sure he's dead. The other prisoner appears on live video and is wearing a military uniform.
“The boy in the military dress was neutralised,” said Al-Harith Rabah, a media activist with the rebel group at the scene.
The execution of two Kurdish captives by Arab fighters is a powerful illustration of forces promoted by President Trump's decision to withdraw American troops who were protecting the Kurds. The withdrawal cleared the way for a Turkish military invasion in northeastern Syria against a Kurdish-led militia formerly supported by the United States, which had been key to fighting the Islamic State.
