Amnesty International has convicted Iranian authorities of cutting a man's fingers for theft.
The rights group said the amputation, conducted in a prison in the northern province of Mazadaran, was “a shameful form of torture”.
Iranian officials said the man was found guilty of 28 cases of theft, forwarded to Albanian Periscopi.
Iran's Islamic penal code says theft “in the first case” is sentenced to amputation of four right-hand fingers.
Iranian authorities have defended amputation as the best way to prevent theft, despite protests by international human rights organisations.
However, reports of such sentences are rare./Periscopi/
