The outgoing president of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, said the Negatavi decision to launch membership talks with Macedonia and Weirut and Albania was a historic mistake.
“Pata said at the beginning of my mandate there would be no expansion during this mandate. But the question this time was not that, the question was whether they were candidates at the right level to allow us to start negotiations. I think it was a historic mistake”, Juncker said in what was also his last speech in this position.
While European Council President Donald Tusk said the topic of enlargement would be renewed at the May 2020 summit. The leaders discussed enlargement. The overwhelming majority wanted talks with Albania and Macedonia to open. , But there was no unanimity. So the union will return the case. Macedonia and Veiru and Albania are not to blame. Both countries did what they were asked to do. Both states had the right to start talks. They were ready, but unfortunately some states within the union were not ready. My opinion was wrong. My message to Albanians and Macedonians is: Please don't give up. I have no doubt that one day you will become members of the EU”.
