Franz Beckenbauer will remain forever in world football history as a legend of his role in the playing field as a player, but also as a coach. However, in the years following football, the other side of the legend is being recognised, as in almost every corruption scandal in football in recent years, his name appears.
As if not enough of the case of the bribe taken and data on the World 2006 where he was in the event's organising group, he has always had a finger, with investigations that have shown his involvement in the 2010 World's appointment, and finally his 2018. The German magazine “Der SpieL” has published an article showing an e-mail exchange between Beckenbauer manager Fedor Radman, and Russia's organising group 2018 before the crucial vote at the FIFA Council for the event.
His manager had made it clear that if “was deemed” properly, Beckenbauer would vote for Russia, as he later did by publicly accepting it. The same sources show that the basic “assessment”, which simply means the vote for Russia was 3m euros, while the other 1.5m euros would go to the Beckenbauer account if Russia were finally declared a organising country, as it did.
Several Russian officials' e-mails show what the situation was like with candidacy in those years and how some of the FIFA executive members were expected to vote, among them Beckenbauer. He has been officially sentenced by FIFA a few years ago, as he failed to respond to her Ethic Commission for some gifts he had received in official activities by bypassing FIFA regulations. He is currently under investigation by the German Prosecutor for his role in the 2006 World Bribe scandal.
