At least 350 thousand people, according to local police figures -- usually saved -- have gathered at the square, seeking the release of political prisoners.
The celebration was held peacefully until evening, when the first clashes near the central police station were confirmed, and at other locations in the centre there were barricades and fires on the street.
Police reacted with tear gas and rubber bullets. According to the preliminary balance, there are 15 injured, among them a policeman, as well as some arrested. Targeted by manifesters is the Supreme Court of Madrid, which 16 days ago condemned nine indigenous leaders who had promoted the 2017 referendum, to 9 to 13 years in prison.
As a result, there came this wave of protests that has so far caused 600 injuries and dozens arrested, following the infiltrate of violent groups in peaceful marches.
