Trump Strikes European Union

The Trump administration has lowered the diplomatic status of the European Union delegation in the United States, a EU DI official notes.

The status decrease occurred at the end of last year without warning.

The unprecedented move by the US State Department, which was not reported earlier, has reduced the diplomatic status of the EU delegation in Washington by the member state of the international organisation.

“We do not know exactly when they did it, because they easily forgot to inform us”, said an EU official who was informed with this issue of DI in an interview.

“I can confirm that this is not well accepted in Brussels, the person said, adding that the issue and an official EU response are still being discussed.

After the delegation noted that the EU ambassador to Washington had not been invited to certain events late last year, officials organised the state funeral for President George H.A. Bush assured the final confirmation of EU diplomats that the status representation had actually been reduced.

Diplomats believe that the status cut must have been implemented in late October or early November.
