Malta has reached an agreement with eight EU countries to wait and separate 49 immigrants who have been stranded at sea for weeks.
Malta's prime minister said that Germany, France, Portugal, Ireland, Romania, Luxembourg, Holland and Italy would host them.
Under the deal, 49 immigrants who stand on sea humanitarian organisations' ships can now land in Malta.
The agreement also establishes the future of 249 rescue migrants currently located in the island state. 49 immigrants were aboard two ships that were not allowed to dock at the ports of Malta and Italy.
A total of 32 people were rescued near Libya on 22 December, by the Dutch ship “Sea Watch 3”, used by a German humanitarian group, and a second ship “Sea Eye”, the same German organization, saved 17 more on December 29th.
The situation on board both ships has deteriorated greatly, with drinking water and missing foods. Pope Francisescu appealed to European leaders over the weekend to show solidarity and give immigrants the opportunity to land at the port.
