Social Democrat Initiative leader and Deputy Prime Minister Fatmir Limaj has said 2018 has been a difficult year for the state of Kosovo, though the country has managed to make a major step towards unification and unity for the dialogue process.
In an interview for the New Age, Limaj has said that the return of dialogue to the Parliament is a step towards unifying Kosovo's political factor for resolving the problem with Serbia.
“Since the beginning this coalition has been confronted with some very important topics of the past, which in one way or another had blocked the country and put it into a political stalemate. The demarcation with Montenegro has ended, just as there has never been a special interest in this government in the economy, especially in promoting small and medium-sized enterprises. In the dialogue we came to the end of having a state delegation, so to return the dialogue to the Kosovo Assembly. The return of the dialogue in the country is a major step towards unifying Kosovo's political factor for resolving this large theme”, Limaj has stressed.
Asked whether it could be a good year for Kosovo, visa failure, non-membership in INTERPOL, the small number of recognitions, as well as the withdrawal of some recognitions, Limaj has added that this year we left behind was extremely difficult.
“Excepting this visa issue, it's like you're saying, because it's been a pretty tough year on these subjects. Unfortunately, we failed to join INTERPOL because of some states where Serbian diplomacy has been very aggressive, so we have not reached where we should be. As for visa liberalisation, I believe the government has done its job, the European Commission's recommendation, which has recommended the EU Council of Ministers lifting visas, then the issue remains the issue of separate states. The state of Kosovo has done its job.
The failure of visa liberalisation has occurred because of the reluctance of separate states, and some of them have made public the hesitations and some no, but the reasons are known more or less”, Limaj said further.
The prime minister has also spoken of leadership with the negotiating team with Serbia, saying that Kosovo now has an address voted by Parliament, a state delegation as the core of needed unity.
After my continued insistence on having another form of talks, after my proposal by the Government and my request to move towards the Assembly to give the opportunity and the opposition, I am pleased to say we have achieved a great success in this regard. We have managed to produce a state delegation voted in the Parliament, supported and with active participation of an opposition group such as the PSD. I hope other political forces will join the road, and now we are in a completely different situation in relation to dialogue. We have a very big job ahead, but I believe that Kosovo with the establishment of the negotiating team has sent a clear message to our partners, first of all, that we are committed to dialogue because, unfortunately, in the past, there have been hesitations about whether Kosovo is really ready for dialogue”, Limaj has posted.
He has announced that on the first ten days of January, he expects them to travel to Brussels and that the meeting is to announce Brussels with the delegation, as well as to show commitment, determination and seriousness for dialogue.
