Kim will be in China until January 10th with his wife, Ri Solou, according to state media reports.
The visit comes amid reports that negotiations are under way for a second summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump.
Both met last June, the first such meeting for a ruling US president.
Speculation grew Monday that Kim was making his trip to China after South Korea's Yonha news reported that a North Korean train had been spotted crossing the border.
Tens of vehicles and security officials blocked roads around the train station in the border town of Dundong.
Hotel guests in Dundong were also not allowed to enter the rooms that were visible from the border, and the newspaper Kyodo called this a “visible action to prevent the train from seeing”.
The two countries confirmed their visit Tuesday morning and Kim's green and yellow train arrived at a station in Beijing on Tuesday morning.
The train, the same used during Kim's first visit to China, resembles that used by his father Kim Jong-il during his visits to China and Russia in 2011.
A highway with many security guards was later seen to drive to central Beijing.
