The Democrat from Texas, Julian Castro, former president of San Antonio, is expected to submit the official candidacy that would challenge President Donald Trump in the November 2020 elections.
Forty-four-year-old Castro, grandson of a migraine from Mexico, has served as secretary of Urban Development during the presidency of Barack Obama and is seen as increasing potential.
Castro had begun to present his position in the debates of state policies that would dominate the nomination race, expected to begin early next year.
My vision for the future of the country is that we intend to be the smartest, healthier, and more comfortable country of the 21C.
Castro has supported the proposal “Medicare for all” that would enable the creation of a national health plan by enabling everyone to become part of public services.
He has used his family history, his grandmother of origin from Mexico, to criticise Trump's border policies.
Castro is the second candidate to formally declare the campaign open for presidential elections. Former US representative John Delaney has been in the race for more than a year, and Senator Elizabeth Warren has begun to develop campaigners in Iowa and Hampshire.
Tens of democratic candidates are considering the possibility of running for president in 2020.
