No agreement has yet been reached between the Government of Kosovo and the teachers for interrupting the strike in education. The teacher's strike at all educational levels has entered the fourth day.
The chairman of the United Trade Union for Education, Science and Culture, Nundman Jasharaj told Radio Free Europe that there is still no meeting of the teachers' demands and that the strike is continuing at all educational levels.
According to him, the strike in education will continue until the implementation of requirements for establishing the cofficiency in the wage Law.
Until now we have no concrete offer either by Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj or the Government of Kosovo. They have said they will make commitments to change the cofficiency, but have given no figures. Our stance is that the minimum wage cofficiency will increase to 30 per cent for all employed at all educational levels”, Jasharaj said.
The wage bill is currently under consideration at the Commission for Public Administration, Local Governance and Media in the Kosovo Assembly, and with rapid procedure it is expected to pass for approval to one of the first House sessions.
According to official data in Kosovo, about 370 thousand is the number of students in pre-university education institutions, while 110 thousand is the total number of students. Meanwhile, the number of teachers at the country level is estimated to be around 23 thousand.
