In an interview for the AFP agency, Zaev urged Macedonians to vote positively in the referendum that will decide the country's re-appointed “Republic of Northern Macedonia”.
The referendum will be held on September 30th as a result of the agreement reached between Macedonia and Greece to end the name issue after many decades.
The name issue between Skopje and Athens dates back to 1991, when Macedonia split from Yugoslavia and declared independence under the name Republic of Macedonia.
Greece has not agreed to the name Macedonia, because according to them, it includes the territory of northern Greece by the same name.
Due to Greek objections, Macedonia has been admitted to the United Nations by a temporary name Republic of the former Yugoslavia, Macedonia.
Greece, a NATO member and the European Union, had declared there could be vetoes in the event of Macedonia's membership plan in these two organisations. (REL)
