German Minister from Belgrade: Kosovo, Serbia can reach agreement, but not with border drawings

Minister for Europe at Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Michael Roth, who is standing on an official visit to Belgrade, says that <x0 bets can be reached with good will and boldness, but that he has also conveyed the message from Berlin that <x2 problems cannot be solved with drawing borders [...]

The German official in a statement to Serbia's state news agency, Tanjug, has commemorated that the <x0) states of the Western Balkans behind them have a tragic history, a civil war of hundreds of thousands killed and millions of people expelled and displaced.

For that very reason, Roth said, everyone must learn lessons from that tragic story.

The future of the Western Balkans is societies that are open to all peoples, religions, cultures. Europe and the EU are engaged in this. So once again I can only warn that problems are not solved with what will be drawn new boundaries”, Roth said, who in the German MPJ is deputy minister and state minister for Europe.

Roth was also asked about the possibility of changing borders, or exchanging territories between Kosovo and Serbia, ideas he said do not even enjoy sympathy in the Balkan region itself.

I have an impression that even in the Western Balkans, because very often I visit it, there is no sympathy for such an idea. The opening of the Pandora Box could be of grave consequences”, the German diplomat said.

According to him, what courageous diplomats can achieve can be seen in the case of Macedonia and Greece, and their name agreement.

“For that I am optimistic, that good will and courage can be reached a Creative solution between Kosovo and Serbia”, Roth has said.
