It was Turkish, Kurdish and German organisations that called for taking to the streets against the Turkish president's visit. In their speeches activists said this pompous visit was not only an unnecessary assessment of the Erdogan regime, but also a slap on all supporters of democracy who have been imprisoned, oppressed or tortured”.
The protest was generally peaceful, except for an incident when a group of people threw stones and bottles at the police. Supporters of the Turkish leader on the other hand will gather at the large Klinni mosque, whose leaders wrote on Facebook, wanting the ceremony there to be a beautiful example of community rapprochement and urged participants not to take political banners and throw slogans.
Due to the huge wave of criticism against Erdogan's ban, both Mayor of the Henriette Recker and local administration head Armin Laschet decided to withdraw from the event.
Turkish leaders, meanwhile, were given a warm welcome by German counterpart Frank Walter Steinmeier, whose state dinner was boycotted by several opposition politicians. Angela Merkel herself skipped the bank.
